Battle of the Bands Report !
M.E.G. Studio's Battle of the Bands on Sept 24, 2005 was fantastic! The show started with Flash Grenade. Catchy tunes with good dynamics and lots of little musically emphasis, combined with a lot of showmanship, high energy and great crowd participation earned them top spot and $300 in prize money.
Discourse on Method offered really balanced dynamics, great harmonies, catchy songs and overall great musicianship. These gals are really great and only lacked the showmanship and crowd engagement that is essential in winning a competition.
Past Having Doubt had strong energy, engaged the crowd, offered very good musicianship with catchy parts. They scored well with our judges and made picking an overall winner difficult.
Oh My Josh, Letter Five and Black Stone Falls represented the second part of the show, which was unquestionably louder and heavier. Perhaps too heavy for some as many in the audience left and the judges scored them overall below the first three band. Make no mistake they appeal to a niche audience and each offered lots of energy, good audience participation and musicianship however they all suffered from a lack of dynamics, harmonies and song variety which are essential for winning a competition.
